How to choose a managed IT provider in the UAE

Every provider says 24/7, proactive and enterprise-grade. Here's how to find out which ones mean it.

Support team monitoring client systems from a central hub

Managed IT proposals look remarkably similar. Same promises, same language, wildly different service once you've signed. The difference usually isn't visible in the proposal — it shows up the first time something breaks at an inconvenient hour.

These are the questions that actually separate providers.

"What does 24/7 mean, specifically?"

Almost everyone claims round-the-clock support. Press for detail. Is someone actively monitoring at 2am, or is there an answerphone and a callback in the morning? Is out-of-hours included or billed separately? Is it staffed by engineers who can act, or a triage desk that escalates to someone who's asleep?

A vague answer here is itself the answer.

"What are your response times, and what happens if you miss them?"

Response targets are meaningless without consequences. Ask what the SLA says, how response is measured — acknowledgement or actual work starting — and what remedy exists if it's missed. Ask to see last quarter's performance against it.

A provider who tracks their own SLA performance and will show you the numbers is operating differently to one who has never been asked.

"Who actually owns the licences and the documentation?"

This one catches people out badly. If your Microsoft tenant, domain, backups and security licences sit under the provider's account rather than yours, leaving becomes painful and expensive. It should all be in your name, with you holding administrative access.

Same question for documentation. Network diagrams, asset inventories, credentials and procedures should be yours, maintained and handed over on request. If a provider is reluctant, they're relying on lock-in rather than service quality.

"What's included, and what generates an invoice?"

Ask for a specific list. Are onsite visits included or extra? New user onboarding? Project work? Hardware procurement? After-hours calls? The gap between the monthly figure and the real annual cost is usually here.

"What does security actually mean in your contract?"

Many managed IT contracts include antivirus and call it security. Ask what's genuinely covered: is there EDR or just AV? Is anyone monitoring alerts, or is the tool simply installed? Are backups tested, and will they show you the test results? Is patching verified or assumed?

If security is an unspecified line item, it's probably an unspecified service.

Signs worth paying attention to

And one practical test

Send a support request during the evaluation period, outside business hours if you can. How quickly someone responds, and how they respond, tells you more than any proposal document. You're buying a relationship, not a licence bundle.
